Steps have been required to move inmates held under Section 54 at the Matara Prison to the Angunukolapelessa Prison following the terrible occurrence which took place at the jail premises due to the falling of a big tree branch last night (01 ).
Matara Prison Superintendent Mangala Weliwita stated that the decision was prompted by the minimal space in the Matara Prison and the need to handle the consequences of the accident.Meanwhile, the prison authorities have ensured heightened security at the jail following the incident, with the cops and Police Special Task Force (STF) offering external security, while officers from the Galle and Matara prisons are overseeing internal security.
In spite of the awful event, Weliwita validated that regular jail activities are continuing as usual.An unfortunate incident happened at the Matara Prison on January 1, when a branch of a Bo tree fell, triggering considerable damage to two prison wards, G and F.
The mishap led to one inmates death and left 11 others hurt, with one prisoner reported to be in severe condition.The deceased, determined as a citizen of the Midigama Turki village, was put behind bars for stopping working to pay a Rs.
20,000 great related to drug trafficking.
The hurt inmates have been transported to the Matara General Hospital for treatment, where they are getting medical care for their injuries.The examination into the incident is continuous, as prison authorities work to resolve the damage triggered and prevent additional mishaps in the future.
